England vs France LIVE as Raheem Sterling returns to the bench after burglary trip home (2024)

This is when it starts to get serious.

The World Cup is whittling down the big guns as we creep towards the showpiece occasion. The favourites are out after Croatia did a number on Brazil, while Leo Messi's dream is still alive after Argentina squeaked past the Netherlands on spot kicks.

Morocco shocked Portugal to join them in the last four, and now it's time to see whether England will reach a second successive semi-final against the Africansafter doing just that in Russia four years ago. Or will holders France show everyone why they went all the way that year and book their spot in the hopes of retaining the trophy for just the third time in history.

Kylian Mbappe is the man to stop. He's the tournament's top scorer and has frightened the life out of just about every fullback he's faced so far. Kyle Walker is no slouch though and is confident he's up to the task of shackling the PSG star.

England know the way to goal themselves though. They are the highest scoring side in the competition with 12, but the French represent a step up from anything they've faced so far.

Stick close to Mbappe

Gary Neville has some advice for England on how to stop the threat of Kylian Mbappe.

He told ITV:

We've seen the goals that Mbappe scores when he cuts in. Particularly, if it's around here and Mbappe is getting the ball in these areas, Jordan's [Henderson] just got to sit in and make sure he's waiting for Mbappe on the inside. Just wait for him.

Kyle Walker will be out marking Mbappe, Jordan's go to be sat inside him. If the ball goes to [Adrien] Rabiot, he then can go up.

But he doesn't go up until that ball has been played. Because if he goes up too early, Mbappe will go inside Walker and he'll be straight onto John Stones

No weaknesses

Didier Deschamps insists England don't have any weaknesses and that gareth Southgate deserves more credit for the job he's done.

France are slight favourites to progress to the semi-finals of the World Cup, but Deschamps, who won the tournament as player and manager with Les Bleus, is taking nothing for granted.

He said:

They don't have any [weaknesses], all teams have strengths, not all have too many weaknesses, only some slightly less strong points.

They have had the opportunity to see us play in four matches even though the third may not be too useful for them.

At the end of the day you also need to make slight changes here and there and recognise slight weaknesses of opponents, areas you can work on

England are 'credible'

Gareth Southgate reckoins England now have major tournament credivility now as well as respect.

The Three Lions reached the last four in Russia 2018 and lost the Euro 2020 final to Italy on penalties.

They could reach the last four again if things go their way against France tonight.

Southgate told the BBC:

I think there's always been a level of respect for England but I think we've got credibility now

To get to a semi-final then a final, I think the rest of the world believe that England are competitive and they know that we have performed under pressure a lot more in the last few years.

When I travel around Europe and the world and meet football people, there's definitely a greater appreciation of what we've done.

Good evening!

Hello and thanks for joining us for the last of the World Cup quarter-finals.

Croatia, Argentina and Morocco are already there, and the winners of this one will play the African national who created history by beating Portugal 1-0 earlier on.

How England deal with Kylian Mbappe could go a long way to deciding whether or not they reach the last four for the second World Cup in sucession.
